Goose Island: Framed Plein Air Color Match Illusion
DESCRIPTION
This is an original oil-painted illusion of “Goose Island” on the historic Erie Canal at Ellicott Creek Park. I created this in springtime, when the creek was a subtle glowy color, and the liveliness of the geese added to the painting experience. This painting has been archivally framed to ensure ideal display and lasting preservation. A certificate of authenticity and additional info about the location are included.

Subject and Process: The historic Erie Canal varies in color throughout the year, and I was especially captured by how it seemed to glow where the water was shallow, by the island bank. This is a very small island that the geese are known to nest on and raise their goslings. I’m well accustomed to sharing public spaces with geese, so I respected them and worked swiftly to finish this illusion.
Erie Canal: The historic Erie Canal, built to connect the Great Lakes to the Hudson River, runs through Ellicott Creek Park, crossing both Ellicott and Tonawanda Creeks. Here, the canal follows Tonawanda Creek’s natural path, unlike the sections carved through the state with back-breaking labor and dynamite. Now, this stretch is a hub for recreation, with biking trails and boating to Gateway Harbor. Canadian geese have claimed the area, raising their young and fiercely guarding their territory.
