Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse: Color Match

$120.00
DESCRIPTION

This is an exact color match swatch of the Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse, built 1876 on Lake Ontario. On a cold winter day, we set out for the lighthouse. It was romantically perched on the cliff, surrounded by icy waters. As it was too rainy to paint a full illusion, I matched the lighthouse on the corner of my paper. The resulting swatch matched seamlessly, and the video was posted on social media February 26, 2023.

THE PROCESS
Through meticulous and dedicated experience, I have the ability to color match virtually anything. I love to record and document colors at whatever fleeting moment in time I happen upon them. The color of something is known to change based on lighting, weather, and other factors, so I value an opportunity to record the color exactly as I see it.

I would have loved to perform a whole illusion painting of the lighthouse, but I have to be wary not to let the painting or my camera equipment get wet. I valued the opportunity to color match the lighthouse even on the corner of my card.

We set up my equipment before the lighthouse, and I had to work very quickly. The icy lighthouse had a foggy, romantic mood, reminding us of the Pride and Prejudice movie starring Kiera Knightley. Having forgotten an umbrella, my husband held a sled from the car over my head while I worked. We found our clumsy modern romance to be an amusing contrast to that of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy.

30 MILE POINT LIGHTHOUSE

The history of Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse is steeped in maritime lore and tales of tragedy and triumph. Perched on Lake Ontario's southern shore, this isolated beacon was not originally intended to guide mariners to harbor but served as a warning against treacherous shoals. The area, known as Thirty Mile Point, earned its name from its location thirty miles from the mouth of the Niagara River. Before the lighthouse's construction in 1876, numerous ships had fallen victim to the unforgiving waters near the point, including the tragic loss of the H.M.S. Ontario, a British warship, and its eighty-eight passengers in a Halloween blizzard.

The lighthouse, built in a High Victorian Gothic style, was meticulously constructed using natural limestone blocks quarried from nearby Chaumont Bay. Over the years, the light evolved from its original lard oil-fueled lamp to an automated beacon atop a skeletal tower. Today, the lighthouse stands as a testament to perseverance and preservation, welcoming visitors to experience a glimpse of life along the historic shores of Lake Ontario.
