Framed Plein Air Color Match Illusion: Bridge Near Where Harriet Tubman Crossed Niagara Falls
DESCRIPTIONThis is a framed plein air illusion of a train bridge near where Harriet Tubman once led freedom seekers to freedom in Canada. I blocked out a portion of the landscape and painted everything that was missing. I posted the illusion on social media (see the full video here) on Juneteenth, June 19, 2023.
DEPICTION:
I chose a train bridge near the Suspension Bridge as the subject for the painting. The Niagara River winds towards the bridge, a brilliant turquoise. The special turquoise color is caused by minerals in the water. The trees are in their summer fullest. To the right of the painting is the ruins of the Shoellkopf power plant which generated renewable electricity from the power of the river.
HARRIET TUBMAN’S CROSSING:
Harriet Tubman, one of the most prolific conductors of the Underground Railroad, led dozens of enslaved people to freedom in the North. (Source: Brittanica.) In November 1856 she guided four escaped slaves via train over the one-year-old Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge to Canada, which spanned the gorge near where today’s Rainbow Bridge stands. (Source: Buffalo Toronto Public Media.) In her memoirs, Tubman recollected urging one of the escaped slaves to look at Niagara Falls as they cross.
PAINTING LOCATION:
I chose to paint a view of the gorge directly to the right of the Rainbow Bridge (which took the place of the Suspension Bridge Tubman crossed) and Niagara Falls. The bridge in this painting is a train bridge.
