Winter Niagara Falls Ornament: Miniature Oil Painting on Birch Round

This handcrafted, hand-painted ornament features a tiny oil painting of Niagara Falls in winter. Clouds roll across a blue sky. Trees and shore line the distance. And the vibrant blue-green water plummets over the Falls. Snowy cliffs frame the view. Towards the bottom of the painting, the snakelike line shows the Cave of the Winds boardwalk.

For my process, I began by preparing the birch round as carefully as I prepare my wood-panel paintings. This included sanding and multiple coats of gesso. I used a small brush to carefully paint the reindeer. A glossy varnish was applied to the top. I finished it with a bright gold ornament string.

Niagara Falls is one of North America’s most famous spectacles. (Source: Britannica.) For many decades the falls were an attraction for honeymooners and for such stunts as walking over the falls on a tightrope or going over them in a barrel. Increasingly, however, the appeal of the site has become its beauty and uniqueness as a physical phenomenon.

Niagara Falls was formed when glaciers receded at the end of the Wisconsin glaciation (the last ice age), and water from the newly formed Great Lakes carved a path over and through the Niagara Escarpment en route to the Atlantic Ocean.
