DESCRIPTION

This handcrafted, hand-painted ornament features a plucky cardinal amid woodland thicket. It perches on a birch branch and looks at you curiously, as if you’ve run into each other in the forest. Backlit, there’s a beautiful white highlight around the edge of the cardinal.

I painted the cardinal in shades of bright red, crimson, purples, blacks, and white highlights. The birch branch is in soft taupe and browns. The blurry blue in the background suggests sky peeping through the thicket.

Cardinals are often associated with romance, and it is believed that if you are single and see a cardinal, romance is in your near future. Cardinals are largely monogamous, and a male cardinal will bring food to his mate while she sits on the nest, offering it to her in a gentle, kiss-like gesture. Cardinals also remain together as dedicated pairs throughout the year, unlike many songbirds that split up after the mating season.
