"Courage": Tiger Micro Oil Painting on Grain of Rice in Magnifying Box

$385.00
DESCRIPTION

I painted a tiger on a tiny grain of uncooked rice. I carefully framed the painting with beveled matting in a clear box that has a magnifying lid.

I wanted to paint something humongous and mighty on the tiniest surface possible. I want this painting to spark conversations about tigers, which are endangered, and remind of the value in conserving this species. I entitled this piece “Courage” to reflect the determination of tigers as well as those who’ve dedicated their efforts to conserve them.

DETAILS:

Oil paint and glossy varnish over a triple layer of gesso.
Grain of uncooked rice.
Black bevel cut matting.
Magnifying box is 1 inch by 1 inch.
Certificate of authenticity included.

PROCESS:
I was ready for a challenge, and this was the smallest “canvas” I could think of. I carefully color matched all the colors to real tiger colors.

TIGERS:

The tiger is the largest member of the cat family, rivaled only by the lion in strength and ferocity. (Source: Britannica.) The tiger is endangered throughout its range, which stretches from the Russian Far East through parts of North Korea, China, India, and Southeast Asia to the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

The tiger has adapted to a great variety of environments, from the freezing Siberian taiga to the blistering hot mangrove swamps of the Sundarbans. Tigers haunt the ruins of buildings such as courts and temples and are at home in habitats ranging from dry grassland to rainforest.

Tigers were prized as trophies and as a source of skins for expensive coats. They were also killed on the grounds that they posed a danger to humans.

About 4,500 tigers remain in the wild, but much more work is needed to protect this species if we are to secure its future in the wild. In some areas, including much of Southeast Asia, tigers are still in crisis and declining in number. (Source: World WIldlife Fund.)
