THE PROCESS

Just before a snowstorm was set to blanket the landscape, I ventured to Dunkirk with a plein air illusion in mind, hoping to seize the remaining light before being snowed in for days. The lighting conditions presented quite the challenge, requiring creative ingenuity. I found myself on the move, relocating my setup several times in pursuit of that precious light. Determination fueled me, and the outcome even brought a touch of whimsy as I playfully "chopped a park bench in two" by covering part of it with the painting. Moments after capturing this scene on film, the sky darkened, signaling the conclusion of this match.

LAKE ERIE AT DUNKIRK PIER

Nestled on the shores of Lake Erie, Dunkirk is a city with a unique blend of natural beauty and rich history. Known for its birding appeal, Dunkirk Harbor remains ice-free in winter, drawing diving ducks and rare avian species. (Source: The Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History.) This exceptional feature is attributed to the warm effluent from the coal-fired electric power plant, ensuring the harbor's ice-free status even when the rest of Lake Erie succumbs to winter's icy grip.

Dunkirk was originally called Chadwick's Bay; its harbor's resemblance to Dunkirk, France, led to its renaming. The Erie Canal and Erie Railroad fueled its growth in the 19th century, supporting industries like commercial fishing and grape shipping. Today, Dunkirk stands as a vibrant city where nature and history converge along the picturesque shores of Lake Erie. (Source: Britannica.)
